Why Illustrated Maps Are More Than Just Art
Elliot on 7th Sep 2025
We made our first illustrated map in 2012. It was of Kew Gardens. A place filled with beauty. It felt like the perfect starting point. Since then, that one print has turned into a growing collection of over 200 illustrated maps, each one rooted in real places and real stories – including lots that started with your requests.
So why maps?
Because they mean something. They’re not just a layout of roads and landmarks. They’re where you got engaged. Where your grandparents lived. Where you had the best holiday, your first house, your 10 years living abroad. And often, a single map can hold more memories than a photo ever could.
Maps have been around for thousands of years. The earliest known ones weren’t even about roads or borders – they were about connection. Where the rivers were. Where the stars aligned. Where your people were.
Then came explorers, tradesmen, dreamers – all using maps to make sense of the world. From hand-drawn parchment to detailed nautical charts, maps have always had a creative side.
In a way, illustrated maps bring us back to that.
Every Map Tells a Different Story
We’ve painted cities, towns, coastlines, national parks and little villages. Some are famous – like our London Map. Others are small spots that hold meaning for just a few people – but they’re just as important.
Each map is designed to be both beautiful and recognisable. It might sit in a hallway, a gallery wall, or above someone’s desk – and every time they walk past it, they’ll be reminded of something personal. A walk. A view. A chapter of their life.
What started as one map of Kew Gardens has grown into a whole collection of over 200 map prints – from Cornwall to the Cotswolds, North Yorkshire to New York City.
Each one carefully illustrated with colour and a carefully curated selection of key spots. We don’t just trace streets – we highlight landmarks, greenspaces, rivers, beaches. We try to make each one feel like the place it’s representing. A tribute to the location, and the people who love it.
